Review
Lencioni has written a simple but powerful book that describes five key areas of team
dysfunction and ways of overcoming them. Using both storytelling and a model, the
author clearly outlines fundamental ingredients for successful team formation and
operation. This book would be a great resource for church staff and volunteer team
training and development. [Note: You can also purchase an accompanying Field
Guide, Overcoming The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, (2005) that would be a very useful
resource for leaders and facilitators implementing training and development activity.]
Selected Brief Quotes
“Teams that lack trust waste inordinate amounts of time and energy managing their
behaviors and interactions within the group. They tend to dread team meetings, and are
reluctant to take risks in asking for or offering assistance to others.” (pg. 196)
“It is important to distinguish productive ideological conflict from destructive fighting and
interpersonal politics. Ideological conflict is limited to concepts and ideas, and avoids
personality-focused, mean-spirited attacks.” (pg. 202)
